Job Description for Lead Physiotherapist

  • Role: Lead Physiotherapist at LEGS
  • Summary: To deliver high quality, ongoing rehabilitation to people who have had a stroke, through the provision of group exercise sessions. To lead in delivering our vision of increasing our number of sessions in new sites throughout London and developing sessions for people living with other neurological conditions.
  • Pay: £38-45k annually according to experience (pro rata)
  • Hours: 0.5FTE (potential to increase up to 1.0FTE and/or job-share in longer term). Hours flexible but must include Monday and Tuesday 11:00 -17:00.
  • Location: Clinical and office sites in west London. Administrative duties may be done from home.


LEGS (Local Exercise Groups for Stroke) is a registered charity providing physiotherapy led exercise and support groups for people who have had a stroke. LEGS was founded by a physiotherapist who recognised the need for affordable, accessible, long-term exercise options once NHS rehabilitation comes to an end.

We have an exciting and unique opportunity for an experienced, dynamic and pioneering physiotherapist to join our team. We are looking for someone with proven clinical expertise in neurological rehabilitation and with experience of group therapy, who is looking to bring their passion to a new challenge. The successful physiotherapist must be able to work independently and engage with the charity’s vision and evolving status. You will be responsible for running and developing our weekly sessions at our west London site and for leading our vision of creating new sessions in other venues throughout London, via collaborations with local authority leisure centres, other charities and exercise professionals. You will be supported clinically by the charity’s physiotherapist board members and administratively by our Head of Operations.


Clinical Responsibilities include:

  • Providing advanced screening and 1:1 assessment for new participants joining the groups
  • Delivering evidence-based circuit rehabilitation sessions, incorporating advanced adaptations and progressions to participants’ exercises in a group environment
  • Designing and delivering the class discussion sessions, including structured information sessions, informal discussion and hosting external speakers
  • Using advanced communication and teaching skills to facilitate long term self-management for group participants
  • Maintaining and managing the attendance register and paper/online patient notes
  • Reviewing LEGS’ outcome measure use to ensure clinical change is measured appropriately
  • Contributing to the collation, analysis and presentation of outcome measure data on the clinical effectiveness of and satisfaction with the service
  • Continuing the provision of and development of our student volunteer programme
  • Investigating and researching other exercise group models, specifically looking at the benefits and feasibility of running sessions in commercial gym settings in partnership with exercise professionals
  • Diversifying our service provision to include people living with other neurological conditions eg Parkinson’s and MS
  • Supervising physiotherapists contracted to run LEGS sessions
  • Taking responsibility for own clinical development, including attending regular training courses and CPD updates


Developmental/Managerial responsibilities include:

  • Developing referral, assessment and notes systems using our online software
  • Increasing our service provision to four sessions per week in our current site
  • Developing and running at least one new session in a new site in collaboration with another charity
  • Contributing to decisions on the direction of the charity including providing input on discussions about venues and strategy
  • Being responsible for sourcing potential new venues, completing risk assessments and creating relationships with other relevant stakeholders
  • Delivering presentations on the service to NHS teams and other referrers such as GP practices, private partners and other relevant teams
  • Leading on the clinical content, structure and development of current and future groups


Skills and Experience Required/Desired

  • BSc (Hons) degree in physiotherapy or diploma or equivalent
  • HCPC registration for physiotherapy
  • Evidence of post graduate professional development in neurological physiotherapy, eg MSc level modules or other post graduate courses
  • Evidence of additional specialist knowledge acquired via pre or post graduate training within exercise rehabilitation/exercise prescription eg REPS 4 qualification OR a desire to work towards this or equivalent
  • Experience of running rehabilitation or exercise groups
  • Experience of working with complex neurological patients in a variety of clinical settings
  • Experience of working with different patient specialties eg orthopaedic, medical, post-surgical
  • Knowledge and experience of audit and research
  • Experience of independent working and using own initiative to problem solve
  • Experience of service development, implementing service change and progression
  • Experience of delivering teaching sessions to own and other professional and patient groups
  • Experience of supervising other clinical and non- clinical staff
